¡Estamos avergonzados!¡Un siglo y medio de persecución y silencio ya es suficiente!En nombre de la bondad y de la belleza. ¡En nombre de los valores humanos y de la libertad!
Como seres humanos iraníes, estamos avergonzados de lo que ha sido perpetrado a los bahá’ís a lo largo del último siglo y medio en Irán.
Creemos firmemente que todo iraní, “sin distinción alguna de raza, color, sexo, idioma, religión, opinión política o de cualquier otra índole” y sin consideración de su origen racial, “origen social, posición económica, nacimiento o cualquier otra condición” tiene todos los derechos y libertades proclamados en la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos. Sin embargo, desde el nacimiento mismo de la Fe Bahá’í, se ha despojado a los seguidores de esta religión en Irán de muchos de estos derechos tan sólo sobre la base de sus convicciones religiosas.
De acuerdo con documentos y pruebas históricas, desde el comienzo del movimiento bábí, al que siguió la aparición de la Fe bahá’í, la espada del fanatismo y la intolerancia ha dado muerte a miles de nuestros compatriotas únicamente por sus creencias religiosas. Sólo durante las primeras décadas tras su establecimiento, unos veinte mil iraníes que se asociaban con esta comunidad religiosa fueron asesinados brutalmente en diferentes regiones de Irán.
Estamos avergonzados de que no se elevara voz de protesta alguna contra los bárbaros asesinatos cometidos en esa época.
Estamos avergonzados de que hasta hoy, las voces de protesta contra este abyecto delito hayan sido escasas y apagadas.
Estamos avergonzados de que además de la intensa represión de los bahá’ís durante sus décadas de formación, el último siglo haya sido testigo de episodios regulares de persecución de este grupo de compatriotas nuestros, cuyos hogares y negocios fueran incendiados y cuyas vidas, posesiones y familias fueran sometidas a una persecución brutal, al tiempo que la comunidad intelectual iraní, no obstante, guardaba silencio.
Estamos avergonzados de que a lo largo de los últimos treinta años, el asesinato de los bahá’ís exclusivamente sobre la base de sus creencias religiosas haya adquirido estatus legal, y que a causa de ello, más de doscientos bahá’ís hayan sido asesinados.
Estamos avergonzados de que un grupo de intelectuales haya justificado la coacción a la que es sometida la comunidad bahá’í de Irán.
Estamos avergonzados de nuestro silencio ante el hecho de que después de muchos años de servicio a Irán, a los bahá’ís jubilados se les prive de su derecho a recibir una pensión.
Estamos avergonzados de nuestro silencio ante el hecho de que miles de jóvenes bahá’ís, por su fidelidad a su religión y su honestidad a la hora de afirmar sus convicciones, hayan sido excluidos de acceso a la educación y a otras instituciones de educación superior en Irán.
Estamos avergonzados de que en razón de las creencias religiosas de sus padres, los niños bahá’ís sean calumniados en las escuelas y en público.
Estamos avergonzados de nuestro silencio ante la dolorosa realidad de que en nuestro país, los bahá’ís son oprimidos y difamados, encarcelados en razón de sus convicciones religiosas, sus hogares y negocios, destruidos, y sus cementerios, profanados de forma regular.
Estamos avergonzados de nuestro silencio al enfrentarnos al largo, oscuro y atroz historial de nuestras leyes y nuestro sistema legal, que han marginado y privado a los bahá’ís de sus derechos, y a las injusticias y el hostigamiento que tantos órganos de gobierno, oficiales y no oficiales, han infligido a este grupo de compatriotas nuestros.
Estamos avergonzados de todas estas transgresiones e injusticias, avergonzados de nuestro silencio ante estos actos.
Nosotros, los abajo firmantes, les pedimos a ustedes, los bahá’ís, que nos perdonen por las injusticias cometidas contra ustedes.
Nunca más guardaremos silencio cuando la injusticia llame a sus puertas.
Estaremos a su lado hasta que obtengan todos los derechos consagrados en la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos.
Unámonos para cambiar el odio y la ignorancia por el amor y la tolerancia.
